Discovering the Hokkaido Light Festival
The Light Path Festival takes place in Otaru for 10 days, from February 11th to 18th. Primary festival locations like the Unga, Temiyasen, and Tenguyama venues are illuminated with lanterns and statues from 5 pm to 9 pm. Additionally, residents adorn their shops and homes with lantern displays, enhancing the atmosphere. Except for the Tenguyama venue accessible by ropeway, all venues are conveniently situated within walking distance from the train station.
The Unga venue, adjacent to Otaru Canal, is a ten-minute walk along the main road from Otaru Station. The Temiyasen venue is situated approximately halfway between the station and the canal, running parallel to the waterway. As for the Tenguyama venue, it is accessible via the upper station of the Tenguyama Ropeway, with round trips available for 1600 yen. You can also access this venue through the lower station from Otaru Train Station.
Stroll along the illuminated pathways, marvel at the intricate ice sculptures, or sample local delicacies from food stalls lining the streets - take in every sight and sound and fill yourself with awe during Hokkaido’s famous winter festivals.
